Excellent observation. I’m going to declare it’s a result of his parents divorce; his way of dealing with them.
I was thinking the impeachment, but yes, the divorce too; he might have felt responsible for that along with bankrupting his town, especially if his parents split up in the aftermath. And resigned from his Minnesota residency, so to speak.

This was the first thing I noticed about Ben’s character…I incorporated it into the very first Parks fic I wrote, but dropped it cause I thought no one else noticed and I was making a big deal about nothing. Good to know I wasn’t crazy. :)
No, not crazy at all. I remember thinking about it in connection to Harvest Festival. It’s something that’s really interesting to me about Ben and his past, how staying in one place and following things through might not be something that comes naturally to him. Which fic was that—the one where they take a road trip to Chicago?
This impulse Ben has to remove himself from a situation to make it better is becoming a thing.
- Leaving Harvest Festival because he was “cursed”
- Breaking up with Leslie
- Resigning from city government (although this one was smart, to be fair)
- Trying to resign from Leslie’s campaign

Ben and Leslie made out a few times and we’re still not over it. That pretty much sums it up lol.
Oh good because I was really worried I’d get here and everybody would be like, “yeah, Ben punched someone, and Leslie made out with him, and probably more off-screen, but that’s old news, we’re over it now.” Like that ever happens! I won’t be over it for a while. At some point maybe I’ll put together some coherent thoughts.

The deleted scene!! YOU MUST WATCH THE DELETED SCENE
I did! I did! I know exactly what you’re talking about, and it was amazing, and I watched it multiple times even though my husband was in the room giving me weird looks. Sometimes it’s just impossible to control oneself.
I didn’t have a chance to watch Parks until last night, so I’ve been offline since Thursday evening, but now I’m back! What did I miss?
about that spoiler last night
There is a cookbook open to a calzone recipe in the kitchen in the background when Ben and Leslie and Tom are talking about the negative ad idea.
More dog parks Senior citizen rights Safe streets Safe sidewalks Better schools Lower taxes Better parks Better business climate Better Better Business Bureau Cleaner streets Improve greenways More snow plows Protecting Pawneeans Improving tourism More trash…
One of my absolute favorite things about this episode was the LAME ASS way Ben kept leaning against the wall whilst his ad was playing. He had to keep re-adjusting himself, too, like, “Oh, hey, this lean isn’t quite cool enough, let’s grab onto this lamp. Yep, there we go, I. Have. Got this. Yeah.”
Goddammit he is so fucking lame and I love him more and more for it.
Okay, well, it’s been a while since I’ve listened to commentaries and I don’t know much about what sets they have, so thanks for the info. I just thought that maybe the reason we don’t see Leslie’s house is that it has so much clutter, and maybe they don’t want to have to deal with recreating that if it’s not necessary. But I do really hope we get to see it again someday (when Ben moves in!).
I was thinking of Jean-Ralphio jumping up on him, and Andy tackling/wrestling with him at the Halloween party.
Oooo! I just thought of something. Ben’s claymation show featured the song “Stand.” Leslie’s event had “Get on Your Feet.” Both song titles that refer to the act of moving from a sitting position to a more upright one! And their respective plots had to do with their attempts to recover after getting knocked down.
I’ve seen the same concern, and I agree, I didn’t take it to mean they weren’t still making time for each other. I e-mail my husband during the workday all the time, and obviously we see each other every day. I like to think Leslie and Ben just miss seeing each other at work and send each other little “hey, how’s it going?” messages and Ben sent her the video because he was excited about it, not because he wasn’t going to see her that night. From the little we saw, I thought Leslie was probably being supportive and nonjudgmental, not that she was oblivious to what he was going through.
William and Elizabeth’s existence continues to puzzle me. People don’t work for nothing, so they were either getting paid or had their own agenda to push. I’ve seen it suggested that they were probably just from a political party, but I didn’t think local elections were usually partisan. Oh well. Good riddance to them!
- The Leslie/Ben dynamic in this episode. I saw somewhere (apologies for not being able to cite it) that people inferred that Ben and Leslie had not seen each other for a few days, which is why he emailed her his video. This could be exactly it. She is wrapped up in her campaign and he is trying…
So, Leslie probably gets her own Ice Clown headline now, right?
